History of Gold in Australia
In 1851 an Australian called Edward Hargreaves returned from the
gold rush in California with a theory that there was gold in Australia. He
started exploring in Victoria and found small pieces of gold.
Soon, people
from all over the world came to Australia looking for gold. Australia’s
population grew extremely fast. Railways and telegraphs were built. There were
also problems with the taxing of miners. The miners rebelled against this at the
Eureka Stockade.
Gold was found in many places in Australia including News South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia.
