SORGHUM

Sorghum is the third most produced crop in Australia, with 1885 kilotonnes produced per year. It is actually a genus of numerous grasses, some are raised for grain but many are used for fodder plants. Sorghum species are used in food, biofuels, cattle fodder and the production of alcoholic beverages. The unmilled grain is used to make couscous, porridges, soups and cakes. Australia exports over 500 000 tonnes of sorghum to Japan, Taiwan and other Asian countries. Most species are drought tolerant so they are cultivated in warmer climates. Australia produces 1806 kilotonnes of sorghum per year, which is mainly contributed to by Queensland and New South Wales which are the top two sorghum producing states in Australia.
