Emblems

The animal emblem of South Australia is the Plains Wombat or the Hairy Nosed Wombat.  The Stuart’s Desert pea is floral emblem. The first recorded observation of Sturt’s desert pea was made by Eyre in the Gawler Ranges in 1839. The South Australian flag has a specific mark on it. This is a picture of a piping shrike, which is a type of magpie. It has a yellow background and the shrike’s wings are outstretched.

Coat of Arms

The shield of the coat of arm has a piping shrike, wings outstretched and on a yellow background. Above the shield is the floral emblem the Stuart’s Desert Pea. The shield sits on a grassy patch with a pick, gears, wheat and nuts.
