Victoria
Flag
Of any of the states, Victoria had
its own flag first. It flew for the first time in 1870. It has the Union Jack in
the top left hand corner like the Australian flag, as well as the Southern
Cross. It also has a crown representing the Queen above the Southern Cross. It
is based on a blue background.
Coat of arms
The coat of arms is on a
grassy base two female figures which represent ‘peace and prosperity’, the motto
of the state. The figures are leaning on a shield with the Southern Cross on it.
The floral emblem, the common health is growing under the shield. On top of the
shield is a kangaroo holding a crown representing Queen Victoria.
Emblems
Leadbeaters possum is one of Victoria’s faunal emblems. It is thought to live only in the area between Marrysville and Tanjil Bren. It can only be found in some parts of Victoria. The bird emblem of Victoria is the helmeted honeyeater. It is only found around small streams in the outskirts of Melbourne. It is very rare. The floral emblem is the pink health it grows mainly in the southern parts of Victoria.
