Western Australia
Emblems
The kangaroo paw, which is native to the state, is the floral emblem. It was first collected in the early years of the European settlement. The well known black swan is the bird emblem of Western Australia. In 1697 it was first recorded by Dutch navigator Willem de Vlamingh. The numbat or banded anteater is the animal emblem of Western Australia. Although the numbat was once found in northern South Australia, today it is confined mainly to south west of Western Australia. The Wandoo forest is its preferred habitat. It lives in hollow logs, which provide shelter and food for the animal.
Coat Of Arms
The shield of the coat of arm for Western Australia has a black swan floating on it. Above the shield there is a crown with Kangaroo Paw flowers on top of it. There are also two kangaroos holding the shield up. They both hold boomerangs. The flag of Western Australia has a specific badge on it. This Badge is of a black swan within a yellow circle and was granted on 1875.
