This is essential as a consolidation exercise for lessons that have been taught at school. It also gives children the opportunity of developing good individual study habits and allows parents to see the work being taught. It is estimated that the maximum time to complete set work, usually on four nights of the week only, is as follows:
Year 7: 1 Hour
Year 6: 45 minutes
Year 5: 30minutes
Year 4: 20 minutes
Year 3: 15 minutes
Year 2: 10 minutes
Year 1: 10 minutes
Year 6: 45 minutes
Year 5: 30minutes
Year 4: 20 minutes
Year 3: 15 minutes
Year 2: 10 minutes
Year 1: 10 minutes
Some teachers set homework on a date due basis to allow children to apportion time for study plans. Generally, homework tasks set for Year 1 and 2 children are of an informal nature i.e. reading, illustrating stories.
If you feel your child is spending much more or less than these suggested times, please discuss it with your child's teacher.
Parents can be great support to their children, the class teacher and the teacher librarian by taking an interest in homework assignments. Reading is a must, especially in the early grades.
Objective:
At Moggill State School, we encourage a balance between homework, recreation, exercise and family pursuits. Homework will reinforce what children are learning in the classroom and give parents some insight into their child’s progress so they are best able to support them.
It is hoped that children will develop time management skills and confidence in planning their work.
Policy:
1. Year level teachers will develop a consistent practice within the frame work of this policy.
2. Teachers will inform parents of their homework expectations at the Parent Teacher Information Evening or by other means at the beginning of the year.
3. The expectation is that the homework will be set for a maximum of four (4) nights per week but that the total weekly time (not including projects) should not exceed:-
Year 7 - 4 hours
Year 6 - 3 hours
Year 5 - 2 hours
Year 4 - 1 hour 20 minutes
Year 3 - 1 hour
Year 2 - 40 minutes
Year 1 - 40 minutes
Year 6 - 3 hours
Year 5 - 2 hours
Year 4 - 1 hour 20 minutes
Year 3 - 1 hour
Year 2 - 40 minutes
Year 1 - 40 minutes
5. At times consolidation activities may be replaced by extension activities for specific children, or regular class homework replaced by work tailored to the individual child.
6. Reading on a daily basis is essential for children in the early years. In addition parents are strongly encouraged to read to their children, at their interest level which will probably far exceed their reading level, throughout their primary school years.
7. Parents are encouraged to discuss any concerns they have concerning their child's homework with the class teacher.
8. Formal set homework should be marked promptly.
