The Principal, Administrative Officer or nominee is responsible for giving oral medication to a student at school.
A written request must be received from the parent or guardian before this may be done. For long term medication, instructions must be written by the pharmacist on the medication. This must include times and quantity.
All unused medication will be returned to the parent or guardian (not the child).
All medication must be kept in the office. The only exception to this is inhaler therapy for asthma which should be secured in the child's pocket and not left in bags, under desks or elsewhere - A form exists for this process. If your child has been diagnosed with asthma, you must supply a current Asthma Action Plan, signed by a GP/medical officer, to the Office.
Under Government Regulations, non-prescribed oral medication (eg. analgesics) must not be administered by staff.
School staff must not give intravenous injections. Other types of injections may only be given by staff who are experienced in this procedure and who are willing to do so. A written request must be received by the Principal.
